Introducing Templify AKA How you'll consume Sharp Architecture v2

by Howard.vanRooijen 7. October 2010 23:44

For Sharp Architecture v2.0 one of the problems the development team was very keen to solve was the problems end users have getting started with Sharp Architecture.

Visual Studio Templates, T4 code generation files, dropping custom DLLs in particular folders etc... all of these steps are painful for the end user and painful for the development team as the majority of the support requests on the discussion group are about environmental set-up problems - these are the most time consuming and difficult problems to solve - they are also a time sponge that prevents the team from devoting time to making Sharp Architecture a better product.

A few weeks ago I started working on a new deployment mechanism for Sharp Architecture - once I had a working prototype it soon became apparent that the scope of this tool far exceeded just Sharp Architecture as it could be used as a generic template and packaging tool - so we made the decision to split it off into it's own OSS project.

So without further ado - let me introduce you to Templify.

Looks very cool.

NuPack was just announced yesterday.  Does that product duplicate any efforts in Templify?  Are there any plans to get Sharp Architecture in NuPack?

NuPack and Templify are actually two very different beasts that do similar things. Templify does not require the user to install anything in VS and in fact, does not work with VS at all.

At this time, we have not discussed using NuPack for Sharp. We might use this to deliver updated assemblies, but it would never be used for delivering the solution package. That will fall to Templify.

Hi,

As Alec says - NuPack / OpenWrap etc... are all about delivering packages - Templify is something that can help you build a package. Our concept of a package is a whole solution rather than just a DLL. So Templify is the perfect tool to allow you to take your perfect web application clone it and give it to every developer within your organisation. So instead of going File > New inside Visual Studio - you would "Templify Here" inside Windows Explorer and it will create the *entire* solution - Build / Assemblies / Projects etc.

Templify packages could be held within a package repository like OpenWrap - as there is a great synergy between the two.
